Former Bad Boy Rapper Confesses to Murder

Former Bad Boy artist G-Dep is in custody in a New York jail with no bail after confessing to killing a Queens man during a botched robbery in October 1993.
Dep (born Trevell Coleman) reportedly walked into the 25th precinct Wednesday (December 15th) and fessed up to murdering John Henkel right outside the James Weldon Johnson housing projects in Harlem 17 years ago. Dep, now 36, was only 18 at the time of the murder.
“It was just eating away at him,” a police source told the NY Post.
Dep told authorities he was riding his bike when he attempted to rob Henkel, 32, on Park Avenue and 114th Street. Dep told Detective William Dunn he tried grabbing his .40-caliber gun. Dep said he then got free and shot Henkel three times in the chest. He then ran and threw the gun in the East River. Henkel was pronounced dead after being taken to St. Luke’s Hospital. Dunn reviewed the case and was shocked to discover that Dep’s confession fit.
Dep’s been through rough times since dropping his Bad Boy debut, Child of the Ghetto in 2001. He’s been arrested 25 times for offenses ranging from drugs, burglary, grand larceny. He’s now been charged with murder and is being held without bail.
“My client is presumed innocent, and the case is going to grand jury,” Michael Alperstein, Dep’s lawyer, told the Post.
This is just sad. Dep was a talented MC. I remember when I first heard him on DJ Premier’s Reality Check 101. The song was called, “Head Over Wheels.” I later heard him on Gang Starr’s “The Mall” off The Moment of Truth and later on freestyles when he was closer to releasing music on Bad Boy. The crazy thing is it took me a while to make the connection. I bought Dep’s album, Child of the Ghettothe first week it came out. I remember being disappointed in his first week sales and rooting for him. Again, sad story.
